To Capture a Story

In the past, the approach to composition and space, artistically, has changed through different cultures and various artistic movements in history. In today’s day and age, designers of all forms make it their quest to continue searching and exploring how principles of composition can be incorporated in their work to express and establish their ideas clearly and effectively.

The elements of unity, figure, ground, negative space, visual contrast, etc are considered design principles and are used to construct the space available. There are some non-conventional approaches to composition that include spatial, rather than framed, arrangements.

Frame division can fracture time and space which allows the viewers to use their peripheral vision to spot specific actions and perspectives simultaneously. The use of various camera movements can help their perception of the space seen on and offscreen.

Frontal and oblique views from any location allow the designer to create a sense of three dimensions as an illusion to the viewer when there are only two dimensions in the framework.

It’s helpful to consider all the techniques and visual styles at your disposal before shooting your footage, so you can adapt your technique, and end up translating your story in the best way possible.
